Casper is seeking a Product Developer to join our team to help us build our mattress, soft goods and textiles portfolio. The Product Developer will manage and drive the product development process by transforming our design and engineering team’s sketches, renderings and prototypes into commercially viable products. The position requires extensive knowledge of the construction, costing and end use of soft goods, including home textiles, apparel, filled goods, bags and accessories.


When you’re not catching zzz’s, this is what you’ll do
  • Direct the product development process for our Mattress, Soft Goods and Textiles projects to achieve commercial viability of designs through collaboration with Design, Engineering, Product Management, Marketing, Manufacturing and other teams
  • Build and manage calendar and timelines for new product development. Take responsibility to ensure the program milestones are reached on schedule, including costing, sampling, quality evaluation and materials approvals.
  • Work with Product and Ops teams to drive materials research, engineering and development in alignment with design aesthetic and sourcing strategy. Proactively research emerging materials technologies and trends, attend trade shows, meet regularly with suppliers, and travel to suppliers when necessary to help drive development initiatives.
  • Partner with Product and Operations teams to determine sourcing strategy.
  • Oversee the production of specifications and ensure they are maintained and distributed effectively.
  • Create and maintain Production Bill of Materials (BOMs). Review the costing and quoting process to ensure the validity and accuracy of all costs from suppliers.   
  • Coordinate factory communication for the development of prototypes, establishing timeline of raw material management and approval requirements.
  • Lead sample review sessions to note design changes, identify development or quality concerns, and clearly communicate revisions to all parties via the PLM system
  • Develop, implement and manage new processes and documents as needed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the product development process.
  • Work in our San Francisco location, travel required.
Our dream candidate is...
  • 10+ years experience in product development, textile development, production and/or merchandising.
  • Good understanding of the design, development and merchandising process from inception through production.
  • Previous experience working bedding, apparel, bags or other soft goods, with significant production experience and strong knowledge and understanding of various manufacturing processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fiber, yarn and knit/woven fabric processing. Cut and sew experience a plus.
  • Ability to take the aesthetic direction from Design, performance requirements from engineering, and work with either the existing mill base or find new potential mills that can effectively execute the desired direction
  • Knowledge of processing and dying certifications and sustainable fiber/fabric practices such as GOTS, OCS, Oekotex, Cradle-to-Cradle, CertiPur and/or other environmental test and certification processes evaluating environmental and health impacts of raw fibers, manufacturing processes and dyes & finishes.
  • Proven performance history with domestic and offshore vendors and manufacturers.
  • Strong project and timeline management skills.  Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage deadlines
  • Has experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools (PLM software), requirements management tools and/or configuration management
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Product Development, Product Design, Design Management, or related field.
