About iwoca

We started in 2012, when we noticed a problem: on average, it was taking eight weeks (and a lot of paperwork) for small businesses to apply for a loan. Worse still, more often than not, that process was ending in a ‘no’.

We knew that bakeries, building firms, salons, and solicitors deserved better. They deserve to be able to grow – hire more hands, invest in stock, market themselves – without all the hold music and absurdly rigid criteria.

We’ve now been around for a decade, and in that time, we’ve:

  • grown to a team of 290 iwocans
  • worked with over 50,000 small businesses across the UK and Germany
  • redesigned the whole business loan process from start to finish – our record is three minutes, 26 seconds.

It’s a good start, but it’s just the beginning. Our mission is help one million businesses who need us, so we still have a long way to go.

Here’s what we’ve learned about lending along the way:

  • Technology is the way to change this space

From automated decisions to API integrations, tech has the potential to create the changes small businesses have been waiting for – so we can’t stop innovating.

  • Embedded finance is the future

More and more, we’re reaching customers by embedding our loans within the apps and systems they use everyday. Our partners are people like neobanks, online marketplaces and accountancy software companies.

  • Payments and credit are converging

Lots of small businesses struggle with cash flow; often getting invoices paid from their customers months after paying their own bills. Loans can help them pay these bills, but we also want to tackle the problem at its root by improving payment terms.

  • New products are always possible

We’re working to create new loans of all shapes and sizes, and we’ve recently launched iwocaPay to help with these cash flow conundrums.

We work hard to make iwoca a place where everyone feels welcome - we want everyone to confidently be themselves. For us, diversity isn't an optional add-on. It's the thing that makes us great.

Requirements

What you'll do:

As a User Researcher at iwoca you will work on a wide range of user research activities, from formative research guiding project ideation to evaluative research testing our solutions and designs. You will work independently making your own decisions, with support and guidance from more senior user researchers - autonomy is one of our core working values.

As a User Researcher you’ll:

  • Plan and design research studies on a variety of projects, selecting methodologies appropriate to investigate a variety of phenomena - not just usability testing!
  • Conduct research activities such as participant recruitment, discussion guide writing, session moderation and research data analysis
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the research process bringing your fellow iwocans along on the journey - including collaborative synthesis workshops, including working closely with analysts to create a holistic picture of user behaviour
  • Teach and enable colleagues to self serve - inspiring our product managers and designers to own simpler usability focused user research with your support
  • Create reports to communicate research findings and maintain our research repository to ensure our work is a sustainable practice - findings are reusable and recyclable
  • Communicate research findings beyond the immediate team, presenting findings at company all hands - carrying the research flag high and being our advocate for user needs

Who you are:

  • You’re skilled and practiced in a range of research methodologies with the ability to understand your teams' needs and select an appropriate approach to generating findings
  • A self starter who enjoys working independently with the autonomy to run research the way you see best. You’ll be keen to introduce new practices, new tools, and level up the research function at iwoca with your influence
  • You’re curious to understand people, and have the skills of an investigative journalist to find out - knowing which questions to ask to probe to the root of the problem
  • Happy working in a fast paced, fun environment - have a catalogue of gifs and emojis at the ready to bring personality to your work! Not afraid to be running several studies simultaneously and have the collected nature to do this with ease and calm
  • You’ll have the right balance between can do attitude and querying “should we do this?” to drive impact through research and be able to work on the most impactful things

The interview process:

Stage 1: Quick chat with an iwocan researcher to hear about us and give us your elevator pitch about you

Stage 2: You’ll complete a quick research task to show us how you’d approach a hypothetical problem

Stage 3: You’ll meet the team in a remote mini social - We’ll check culture fit and you can ask us lots of questions

Due to COVID we are currently working full-time from home. Whilst there will never be any expectation from us that you return full time to the office, we do like to get together from time to time for team meets and lunches.
