Your impact at SumUp

As part of our vision to become a truly global IT organisation, we have started to build out local, autonomous, cross-functional squads that can take an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution with full autonomously. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a part of one of our new squads in Brazil, which means that you will have the freedom to experiment with new things and apply your ideas in our products.


Your role and responsibilities

  • Be a technical leader within your team.
  • Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators.
  • Provide thoughtful and comprehensive documentation and testing for your features before shipping them.
  • Design, implement, and iteratively improve new services and systems.
  • Collaborate with other Software, QA and DevOps engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continual operation and support for quality software.
  • Coach and mentor other engineers to increase their abilities and productivity.
  • Actively provide code review feedback to other software engineers, considering both style and implementation.
  • Interact daily with our different areas bringing technical perspective for each new feature, but also taking account the business value added on it.
  • Requirements

  • Experience with Agile Methodologies (Scrum or Kanban)
  • B.S. or M.S. Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent fundamentals;
  • 5+ years of experience in a Software Engineering Role;
  • Experience with one or more of the following languages: Ruby, Javascript, Erlang/ Elixir, Java/Scala, GoLang, Python;
  • Fluent in Git;
  • Experience with SQL (PostgreSQL);
  • Solid OOP and Functional Programming skills;
  • Solid debugging, optimisation and problem-solving skills;
  • Self-motivated, proactive and engaged attitude towards projects;
  • A strong candidate will also have:

  • Good working knowledge of message brokers - RabbitMQ, Kafka;
  • Frontend skills as sometimes it might be handy in new squads;
  • Experience working in an international, distributed team;

We created a unique device that allows small merchants to accept card payments anywhere.     We are looking for strong candidates that have interest in helping us get there and building great products along the way. If you feel like one of these people, our office in Sofia is hiring for the position of a (Senior) Backend Engineer - eCommerce.

    In this role, you will have the chance to be a part of a new business venture building the eCommerce business of SumUp from the ground up, allowing you to be the owner of your work, take decisions and immediately put them into practice. You will join a small cross-functional team which will provide you with the opportunity to be leading the design, implementation and release of new delightful features across various platforms and establishing the existing leading global card acceptance role of SumUp further into the “card not present” space. We are developing and expanding modern APIs and services to offer seamless customer experience to our partners and merchants by launching new payment methods, stepping into new markets and extending product capabilities.

    In this role you will work on:

  • Build new consumer facing APIs or iterate over on existing APIs
  • Launch new payment methods to support global product offering
  • Integrate new payment acquirers, payment system providers and facilitators
  • Build new tools for use from our business and operations teams
  • Requirements

  • Experience with Ruby, Node.js, Elixir
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs
  • Experience with RDBMS and Postgres in particular

    As a System Administrator, you would be working alongside other engineers to design tools that assist in the development of applications, but also allow development teams to deploy and run their applications in production. We use tools such as Amazon Web Services, Docker/Containers, Jenkins, Prometheus, GitHub and much more.

  • Manage the production and publishing of various documentation sets
  • Collaborate with Engineers and Product owners to understand new and existing features and functions
  • Identify user needs and use cases to focus priorities
  • Write and edit various technical documents, white papers, presentations and other content for a variety of internal and external audiences
  • Requirements

    Minimum qualifications:

  • Excellent English writing and communicating skills
  • Understand and communicate complex information in a clear, understandable and concise manner
  • 5 years of experience writing software documentation in a web production environment

  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working closely with engineering and product teams as part of the software development process

    What you’ll be doing in this position

    - You will support the New Ventures Manager (Expansion) in various activities to launch SumUp in new countries

    - You will understand the payment industry and how a payment company works in literally every aspect – from strategy to day to day operations

    - You will produce action-oriented reports, on topics such as market entry economics, competitive analyses, consumer behavior and recent market developments

    - You will help identifying red flags in the markets early on and work together to remove road blocks

    - You will support the selection process for the new countries´ core teams, including the CEO and other C-level team members

    - You will interact with local stakeholders in the target countries, such as banks, acquirers, sales partners, future merchants and others, to ensure complete alignment and a solid business case

    - You will coordinate internal stakeholders in the implementation, and get involved in areas from logistics to technology, from regulation to marketing, in order to build the new operations from the ground up
