Full Stack Developer - Latin American Teams

Who we are

TransferWise was founded in 2011 with a clear mission: Money without borders - so people and businesses can send and receive any currency effortlessly, whenever, wherever.

Sure, the heart of what we do is international money transfer. And we’re committed to making it instant, convenient and fair for millions of people, all over the world. But we’re growing our other products and our teams at an exciting pace. And we’re looking for the very best to jump on board.

What it’s really like to work here

At TransferWise, we do things a bit differently. There’s no corporate nonsense, and no old-fashioned hierarchy. Instead, we work in dozens of self-sufficient, autonomous teams. Think of them like start-ups within a start-up that learn from each other.

Each team picks the problems they want to solve. So there’s no micro-management. No hiding behind fancy job titles. And no one telling you what to do. You are your own boss. But you’ll get tons of guidance and plenty of support from talented, super-smart colleagues from all over TransferWise.

We’re going to be upfront — the way we work doesn’t suit everyone. But if freedom, autonomy, and life-affirming, head-scratching professional challenges rock your world, we could be a match made in heaven.

Product engineers only

Here at TransferWise we don’t hire coders, who pick up tickets from a backlog and push code to production without considering value and impact.

What we are working on:

  • Our mission is to expand TransferWise in Latin American countries, so we are constantly working on integrating new partners such as banks and financial institutions.
  • The challenges in this region are many: regulations (for instance anti money laundering checks, licences, etc), optimisation of cash movement, trading risk management, localised payment methods, volatile currencies.
  • This is the list of countries that we are planning to integrate in the near future: Argentina (sending and receiving), Chile (sending), Mexico (sending), Paraguay (receiving).
  • Long term plan: all countries; both flows: sending and receiving. We are focusing mainly on two streams: the first one is to open new routes and the second is to localise and improve existing ones.
  • We are a vertical team that operate from backend to frontend and mobile apps (iOS - Android).
  • Latin American team works following Agile principles which we periodically review and adjust according to our needs.
  • At its core, our stack is Java microservices, using Netflix OSS offerings, and SPAs written in Angular 1/React, with a legacy Grails monolith. We are moving quickly to proven distributed technologies that can be scaled (Kafka, Zookeeper, Spring Cloud +  much more)More details: http://tech.transferwise.com/the-transferwise-stack-heartbeat-of-our-little-revolution/

Must Have:

  • Java experience, back-end MVC Frameworks
  • Experience working closely with relational databases
  • Experience with API integrations (Restful or otherwise)
  • Experience with messaging services
  • We do not have QA’s- we look for engineers with a strong sense of ownership and mindfulness around test coverage.

Mindset

  • We get it done - in a market of this scale we cannot afford to stall and wait.
  • Every engineer in the team is able to work independently and plan their own solutions to problems. We build it, we ship it, we own it.
  • We understand the concepts of A/B testing, value the importance of direct customer feedback and know how to measure impact.
  • We put the customer at the heart of everything we do. Empathy drives every decision we make.
  • But we are not working alone, we have a strong sense of teamwork and we spend a good portion of our time collaborating with the rest of the team.
  • We work very closely with Operational and customer facing teams, so we are looking for nice communication skills and people able to collaborate with non tech colleagues: being able to communicate and collaborate with non tech colleagues is paramount.
